Bullying (Risky Buisness)

Carl sits in his room quietly.  The young boy couldn't have been over 11 or twelve.  Tears are pouring down and he cries softly to himself.  He feels like he is trapped in a tiny box with no one who could hear him or offer him comfort.   Kids in his community had bullied him relentlessly..........for what reason though?  For being himself.   The voices of the tormentors echoed in his head, "Hey FAGGOT!!" "Take this ya' gay BASTARD!".  The words bounced of the walls in his head making his head ache with excruciating pain.  He made his decision.  He rather take death then this continued torment.  His mind was made up....... His pain would end tonight.  He lifted the pistol slowly up to his head and......BANG!  He had shot himself square in the head blood dripping down his cold lifeless body.  This sounds like the scene from some sort of horror movie but it's not.  Hundreds of situations like this happen everyday because of issues with bullying.  Bullying is a big problem, which can scar kids with untrue words and can even force kids to think they are nothing even up to their adult hood.  It can even force kids to take there own lives with the thought of that being there only option.  Bullying is a big issue which can scar kids for life and we as people must do more to stop.
According to bullying statistics dot org about 282,000 students are reportedly attacked and bullied for each month.  There are probably thousands of others that aren't reported each year that are bullied.  Sadly, as of 2010 bullycide (suicide from being bullied) is one of the leading causes of death in children under the age of 14.  It is terrible to know that kids that havent even reached there prime are already killing themselves because people around them need to feel superior by taking out there anger and hatred on these individuals just because there different.  It was recently recorded in 2010 that 1 in 10 students switch or drop out of school because of bullying issues.  It is terrible that such a high percentage of students dont feel safe at school someplace they go to everyday because they know someone is there that will torment them for no good reason often for just being themselves.
Some people on the opposing side say that people are doing enough to try and stop bullying.  If that is so then why according to Yale School of Medicine suicide rates from bullying has gone up more then 50% in the past thirty years.  Whenever Bullies are caught most of the times the tormentors are just given a lecture and then allowed to go back with no further consequences.  Often times these lectures not only do nothing but make it so that the tormentors worsen there torture.  An example of how we could be doing more to handle these bullying incidents is the case of a nine-year-old boy named Montana Lance who hung himself in the nurses bathroom after being bullied.  It was told that he tried to report these incidents but the teachers would just tell him to stop being a tattle tale/
The school system and the community around us could be doing more to stop these bullies at young age and to instill in them that it is not okay to hurt someone for your own benefit.  We could also be more observant and see the signs of the victims and to try to intervene before its to late.

  1. Hello Chad!
Your essay looks good - however, I noticed some discrepancies in the body paragraphs: Your intro does not seem to have a thesis statement, but more of an introductory to a situation/idea of a case of what a bullying may cause. While reading the essay, I noticed only one side - the Con. You make a side (The Opposing side, as you call it,) very visible, but I hardly see any of the Pro side, much more of a listing of statistics. Besides that, I think you should include a little more about the other aspects of bullying, and what should belong on the Pro side.

  2. Nice quotations :p
In paragraph 3 however, you start off with "According to bullying statistics dot org about 282,000 students are reportedly attacked". Unless you're going to make your entire paragraph about statistics (Which it's not), I would change it to something more about the paragraph and less what you found on Google.

  3. Hi Chad,
Your teammates have made some pretty accurate comments (although I think Zach may be misinterpreting the "pro" and "con" label.)

The major area for revision, however, is in the overall thesis. I actually do not have one written down for you. Your intro says it is that we "must do more to stop [bullying]." But it needs to be more specific and it needs to be distinct from the rest of your team. Dallas is saying that the government should do more to combat bullying. Zach is supposed to be arguing that there should be classes on bullying. What is your angle on this topic?
Please see me to get your thesis checked before you revise.
